The first ever Tour de Jerusalem bicycle race, former President Katsav beginning his 7-year term in prison and the special Hamshushalaim free activities in Jerusalem were not the only news worthy events this week.
150 people participated in Melabev's Annual Walkathon to benefit people with Alzheimer's disease. This year the group included several multi-generational family groups. The largest one was the Wallis family with 16 members - including 4 generations whose ages ranged from 6 months up through mid-70's or more. Their dog came along as well dressed in a Melabev blue t-shirt.
All the walkers met at Melabev's state of the art day care center in Talpiot that cares for people with Alzheimer's disease who's mother tongue is English. They were serenaded by harp music and ate a bit before setting out for the moonlight walk from Mitzpe Yericho walking through a dry river bed to the moshav of Vered Yericho with a breathtaking view of the St. George's Monastery behind. Although people brought along flashlights, there was no need to use them, because the light of the moon was so bright.
After a lovely walk, the group was served a barbecue on the lawn of Vered Yericho. The music played by Howie Kahn in the background got some of the intergenerational group up dancing. Those not returning back to Jerusalem that night continued on their way, for two days hiking in the Golan. The ambiance was great with everyone excited to be raising money for a worthy cause - to improve the quality of life of people with Alzheimer's and dementia.
If you haven't yet sponsored one of our walkers - now is your chance.
Hope to see you on next years walk!
