Some
of the specialized activities offered in the clubs are:
art therapy, dance therapy, music therapy, physical
therapy, horticulture therapy, pet therapy, computer
lessons, cooking activities, intergenerational connections,
parties, trips and so much more. MELABEV's highly professional
staff understand that the participants need to feel
appreciated as distinct individuals still able to use
their remaining skills. The club members have a reason
to get up in the morning, with a familiar place to go
and friends to see. Roundtrip transportation is provided
from most Jerusalem neighborhoods as well as a mid-morning
snack and a hot lunch meal.

Memory
Clubs
For many years no service was available to meet the
needs of people at the beginning stages of dementia
who suffer from mild memory loss. These people who are
no longer able to function properly in their old surroundings
(i.e. work, home management) may nevertheless feel uncomfortable
in a day care center for people with more advanced dementia.
They may require specialized programming to help them
deal with their changing abilities.
MELABEV
was among the first to start programming for this population.
Now MELABEV runs four memory clubs ( English, Russian
, and two in Hebrew) just for these people. Here the
members are able to talk about their memory difficulties,
and do special mental exercises that help them make
full use of their present cognitive abilities. Having
a supportive environment with friends and caring staff
alleviates some of the anxiety associated with the changes
dementia can cause and has proven to slow down decline.
MELABEV is in the process of beginning a support group
for people in the early stages of the disease. This
is an innovative program that will help both the patient
and their family cope with the devastating news and
plan for the future.

Memory
Assessment Clinic
Mental decline and cognitive impairment can have many
causes including illness, environmental changes and
even psychological problems. Early assessment of any
decline in memory is very important in order to catch
and treat reversible changes and to be able to plan
ahead in the case of irreversible memory loss. People
experiencing memory problems can call the Memory Clinic
of Shaare Zedek Medical Center to schedule a thorough
battery of tests to determine, if possible, the reasons
for these memory changes. The comprehensive examinations
include a report from a Geriatrician, a neurologist,
a psychologist, an occupational therapist, and a social
worker. Phone: 02 6666882

Home
Care
Many elders who could benefit from the programs offered
at MELABEV's day care centers and memory clubs are unable
to attend for various reasons. Perhaps they have difficulty
going on transport, or they don't like groups, or they
wake up too late in the morning. Some members of the
day care centers deteriorate and can no longer attend
the program. Therefore MELABEV began a service to bring
some of the specialized activities to them in their
own home. The Nathalie & Isidore Friedman Memory
Center home care program also offers support services
to the caregiving family.

SUPPORT
FOR THE FAMILY

Introduction
Caring for someone with dementia is never easy. MELABEV
provides numerous services for the caregivers to help
them with their never-ending task. These services include
counseling & support groups, respite services, special
needs project and the resource center.
Counseling
& support groups
MELABEV's staff provides practical guidance, advocacy
and empathic counseling for the care giving families,
to make management of the elderly easier after they
return home. Our social workers lead support groups
for the spouses and adult children of the person with
dementia.
Respite services
Among
our other support services to the families is our subsidized
respite service, whereby their demented elderly relative
can stay in a round the clock facility for psychogeriatric
patients while the family care giver receives a needed
break of up to two weeks. The family can have a brief
respite from their caregiving burdens relaxed in the
knowledge that their loved one is being well looked
after by experienced staff. They can then continue with
their caregiving responsibilities with renewed strength
and energy .
Special
Needs Fund
We also run a "Special Needs Fund" which provides funds
for families unable to purchase the adult diapers their
elderly need, or the home help they require, or the
uncovered costs of medications they cannot afford.

Russian
Programming
Given the fact that there are many elderly people in
Israel who speak Russian and that people with memory
problems may revert to using their mother tongue, MELABEV
runs some of its programs in Russian.
In
the Southern part of town the MELABEV Day Care
Center operates a Hebrew speaking and Russian
speaking group simultaneously in the same facility.
In the Northern part of town the MELABEV Memory Club
has been offering a specialized program only for Russian
speakers in the early stages of memory dysfunction.
A new group just opened in Pisgat Zeev in the afternoon
hoursmaking it possible for Russian speakers with more
advanced dementia to join our daycare program as well..
Some
of the activities for the Russian speakers are conducted
together with the Hebrew speaking group such as holiday
celebrations and meals. Others are separate. MELABEV
also has Russian speaking social workers available to
provide support for the family.
