Introduction
Welcome to Melabevs resource center.
We are here to help you with your questions
on Alzheimers disease and other forms of dementia.
MELABEV's
Lucien and Ruth Harris library and resource center has
books, journals and pamphlets relating to the care of
people with dementia. The library has considerable material
in Hebrew, English, and Russian as well as some in French,
Spanish, and German. Professionals, students, volunteers,
and family caregivers can find literature here that
they might not have access to in other libraries in
Israel. The library also has information that is appropriate
for the person with dementia as well as for young people

hints in dementia care
Managing mealtimes.
People with dementia may prefer small frequent meals
or snacks(i.e. with finger food) rather then large sit
down meals 3 times a day.

Publications
MELABEV staff are among the best resources available
on Alzheimers care. Many of them have written articles
on the topic that were published in national and international
professional journals. The staff have also written a
book sharing their expertise on Alzheimers care.
The book is available in the library and can also be
purchased.
Berenbaum, Rakel ed.Working with Alzheimer's Patients
(Jerusalem: Eshel and Melabev) [English and Hebrew]
Caring for the demented elderly at home is difficult
and debilitating, yet institutionalization can accelerate
the deterioration caused by the illness.
In this book, Melabev staff members survey their professional
work in the day care centers, sharing their rich experience
with care providers in the hopes of contributing to
the level of care and the quality of life for patients
and their families.
The
book includes an introduction about dementing diseases
by Professor Arnold Rosin and a chapter by geriatric
social worker Leah Abramowitz about the needs
of the family caring for psychogeriatric patients at
home. Other chapters by other members of the Melabev
staff discuss activities that have proven beneficial
with this special population such as; dance, art, music,
cooking, and physical therapy.
The
book is written in a manner that makes it useful both
for professionals in the field and family caregivers.

Events
The resource center organized a lecture for MELABEV
staff by Christine Bryden author of the book Who Will
I be When I Die. Christine herself has dementia and
told staff what it feels like to be mentally impaired
and what people with the disease want from their caregivers.
To quote from her talk As we become more emotional
and less cognitive, its the way you talk to us,
not what you say , that we will remember. We know the
feeling, but dont know the plot. Your smile, your
laugh, and your touch are what we will connect with.
Empathy heals. Just love us as we are.
